Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major health problem that disproportionately affects young people. It is the leading cause of death for children. TBI is often referred to as the “silent epidemic” because the complications, such as changes affecting thinking, language or emotions, may not be readily apparent. The “silent epidemic” slogan is particularly apt in Connecticut, where inadequate resources, awareness and identification of TBI lead to preventable injury and suffering to children and their families.

State of CT General Assembly Commission on Children, TBI in Children: CT’s Silent Epidemic, June 22, 2010.

Brain injury is the leading cause of injury and death in children in Connecticut. The most common way children and teens sustain a brain injury is through falls, motor vehicle crashes, sports concussions, assaults, and abuse. The Brain Injury Alliance of Connecticut strives to reduce and prevent brain injuries in children and teens through outreach to the community and collaborative work with statewide injury prevention specialists. Through our efforts, we aim to work collaboratively with schools and communities throughout Connecticut toward a collective goal of keeping our children and teens safe.
